WHAT IF I...?
Get Divorced or Legally Separate

Here's what you need to do:

  • Review your spouse’s and/or dependents’ benefits coverage. Benefits may continue for dependent children, if you have custody of the children or are under the terms of a Qualified Medical Child Support Order. Make your benefits changes by entering the necessary information on the www.valassisbenefits.com web site or contacting your Human Resources Representative or the HR Solution Center at 1-877-238-6847.

  • Consider continuation coverage. If they are no longer covered under your Valassis benefit plan, your spouse and/or dependents may be eligible for continuation of medical, vision and dental benefits under the provisions of COBRA. Your spouse and/or dependents may also be able to convert any dependent life insurance to an individual policy.

  • Review FSA contributions. You can begin, stop or change the amount of your contribution
    to a:

    • Health Care Spending Account, and/or

    • Dependent Care Spending Account.
  • Review your designated beneficiaries. You may change your beneficiaries for:

    • Basic and Voluntary Life and AD&D Insurance
    • Retirement Savings Plans

To designate or change a beneficiary, sign onto www.valassisbenefits.com and choose the "Enroll or Make Changes" option in the upper right hand corner. You are automatically the beneficiary for any life insurance you elect for your spouse and children. You may also complete a life insurance beneficiary designation form or one for the retirement plan and submit it to the HR Solution Center.

  • Consider changing Valassis Retirement Savings Plan contributions. You may change your contribution amount or begin contributing to the Valassis Retirement Savings Plan.

  • Comply with a Qualified Medical Child Support Order (QMCSO). You may be required to continue medical coverage for one or more dependents under a QMCSO. If Valassis receives a notice of judgment or decree, you will be notified.

  • Comply with a Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO). You may be required to distribute all or part of your vested retirement account balance to your spouse, former spouse, child or other dependent to meet marital, alimony or child support obligations imposed on you by law. If Valassis receives a notice of judgment or decree, you will be notified.

Make changes to your W-4 and submit it to payroll. You can also complete it electronically through the Web using Employee Self Service (ESS), which is accessible through the associate portal.

  • Notify Valassis of emergency information. You should inform Valassis of any changes in your name, address or emergency notification information by contacting the HR Solution Center at 1-877-238-6847.

  • Consider revising or drafting a will.

  • Consider your rights under your spouse’s pension or savings accounts.
